At the launch that saw over 50 student journalists participating, President of MEDEC Mr. Okunyin Boaz Orlan-Hackman stated that there was the need for journalists in the country to focus their attention to issues affecting society rather than those that merely created sensation and sometimes heightening political tension.
Mr. Richard Ellimah, Executive director of the Centre for Social Impact Studies in his chairperson’s address said the capacity of journalists in Ghana need to be built in order to enable them report comprehensively on specialized areas such as health and environment. While bemoaning the situation of some journalists being manipulated to carry out misleading reports in the interest of powerful multinational companies and to the detriment of marginalized poor communities.
Speaking on the status of environmental and resource reporting in Ghana Dr. Messan Mawugbe of the Centre for Media analysis expressed worry at the level of attention paid by journalists to issues affecting the environment remarking that, it was an indication the current breed of journalists were not much interested in addressing basic societal challenges.
Mrs. Hannah Owusu-Koranteng, Associate Executive Director for human rights, environmental and mining advocacy NGO, WACAM called for a review of Ghana’s current minerals and mining act which she explained makes mining communities vulnerable to negative effects that comes with the type of mining done in the country.
Journalism Clinic according to organizers will he held thrice each year to incentivize young journalists towards environment and development reporting as a way of sanitizing the profession and encouraging responsible journalism.
